Generative AI Audiobook Usage

I am happy to offer AI-read audiobooks through Google Play Books creator and Amazon’s audiobook creator. The books are available widely. I offer them for many reasons:

  • My nonfiction audience asked me to make audiobooks available for sale and 95%+ did not care if they were AI-generated
  • I am a proponent of publishing everywhere and want to offer my work in as many formats as possible
  • As someone who needs accessibility, I believe in accessibility
  • I accept that AI is here to stay and have chosen to adapt
  • My books are re-published with updates frequently (every 1-5 years). My audiobook sales and niches/genres are such that it rarely makes financial sense to hire a human narrator (but when it does, I’m all for it!)
  • I don’t have the spoons or the skills to narrate my books myself, nor keep up with the updates
  • I am not taking jobs from narrators because I would not have created an audiobook of most of my books without this technology

Generative AI Translation Usage

I am happy to offer AI translations of my books into other languages! My books are primarily translated using generative AI, but I hire human editors where appropriate. The books are available widely. I offer them for many reasons:

  • Most translation is already done through AI and has been for a decade+ (this is not new)
  • I am a proponent of publishing everywhere and want to offer my work in as many formats as possible
  • I believe in fueling the creator economy with knowledge of how to succeed
  • Many of my books are educational and informative and writers in other languages can learn a ton from my work (and make life-changing money, too)
  • My books are re-published with updates frequently (every 1-5 years). My translations sales and niches/genres are such that it rarely makes financial sense to hire a human translator (but when it does, I’m all for it!)
  • I have 50+ books and don’t have the spoons or the skills to update my books myself in different languages, but the information is extremely valuable even if imperfectly shared
  • I am not taking jobs from translators because I would not have created translations of most of my books without this technology

Generative AI Writing Usage

I have been using dictation and transcription to write books since 2012. I began doing so due to health issues, including carpal tunnel syndrome and chronic dry eyes which did not allow me to sit at a computer for extensive hours per day.

Dictation and transcription is a common practice for writing books in both fiction and nonfiction. Many of my books started as video transcripts of course material, and most of my fiction has been dictated or transcribed over the years.

Early on, my dictation process used to involve expensive software or costly human transcription services, but now I can do so at a fraction of the cost with generative AI. I have also used AI to summarize my detailed, extensive notes and outlines on a variety of topics.

This content often becomes a first draft or a portion of one that has come from my own thoughts, ideas, research, outlines, writing, and speaking, that I then continue to edit extensively into a final draft (I’m a perfectionist in my writing and phrasing of things). These drafts are used for my public work online, including social media, newsletters, blog posts, and more. All of those channels are ones I pull content from for my books (often, my books are partly a collation of work that is posted to these channels, mixed with new content).

Because generative AI can change phrasing and other elements of the content, I now disclose every book as AI-assisted due to the sensitivity of the market. I will drop this distinction in a few years when the market catches up to the technology!

Generative AI Editing Usage

I mostly edit my books myself, or hire an editor/proofer, but I also use software that uses generative AI to edit my books. This includes spell check, Grammarly, and Pro Writing Aid.

Because generative AI can change phrasing and other elements of the content, I now disclose every book as AI-assisted due to the sensitivity of the market. I will drop this distinction in a few years when the market catches up to the technology!

Generative AI Art Usage

I am a trained pencil artist and do not currently use generative AI tools to create art. This could change in the future! At the present, I create all my own cover artwork unless a human designer is listed.

I use stock photos and templates obtained legally for commercial use, however, I cannot guarantee that they are not generative AI. I trust stock websites to license images legally to me.

I also use Adobe products including Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator, and I don’t have the spoons to keep track of which tools could be construed as generative AI. I do not make efforts to avoid or distinguish between potential generative AI tools within the software.

I do not currently disclose every piece of art as AI-assisted at this time due to not actively using tools that are considered generative AI, but I continue to watch the developments and will disclose if required by platforms.
